FROM THE RECTOR
Enthusiasm, betrayal, death, resurrection: the events of Holy Week have it all.
One week in the life of Christ, Palm Sunday to Easter, yet for those whose lives
are bound to him in faith, these are vital days that engage with our own joys
and pains and sense of purpose.
It is sometimes assumed that merely knowing the stories of religion is all that
matters. I disagree. Knowing the story is just the beginning. It is in the living
of it, day in, day out, that we taste its worth.
In the celebration of these days prepare to be challenged - we will not be disappointed.

The HIV/AIDS clinics are in great demand. The water supply has been improved

infection rates. Upgrading of housing and wards is continuing. USPG aims to

ALDBOROUGH PARISH COUNCIL
Annual Parish meeting on Monday 5th April at 7.30 in the Community Centre.
All residents are invited to come to this meeting, to hear about Parish Council
activities during the last year, to ask questions, to make suggestions or to
bring things to Parish Council notice.
>From the last Parish Council:-
1. Children have been climbing young trees on the Green recently. This is dangerous
to both children and trees. Parents need to make their children aware of the
potential problems. There are plenty of large old trees in the woods!
2. Parking on the Green. The recent wet weather highlights this problem. Much
damage has been caused because of either inconsiderate parking or regular parking
on the wet ground. The Parish Council would welcome any ideas to improve parking
facilities. One suggestion has been to make existing bays deeper and park 'nose
in'. What do you think? Ideas to any councillor please.
3. The AGM of Parish Council will be on Monday 10th May.
4. Annual clean up around the Green - Saturday 24th April 9.00am
ALDBOROUGH COMMUNITY BUS will start operating a monthly trip to Wroxham
on the second Wednesday of each month.
The service will begin on 14th April and depart from the Black Boys at 9.00am
Route will be via Banningham, Colby, Felmingham, Skeyton and Swanton Abbott,
arriving in Wroxham at 10-00am. The return journey will depart from Wroxham
at 12-00noon.
ALDBOROUGH COMMUNITY CENTRE news

at reasonable rates? Ring 01263 761310 or 01263 768749 to book.

ALDBOROUGH CHURCH ROOM
Parking problems! These have been exacerbated by the wetness of the Green and
by the increased use of the Church Room. Please remember the residents in that
corner of the Green. Access to houses must be maintained - residents have to
go in and out, they have to have turning space, there must be room for delivery
vans, and for emergency vehicles.
Please be considerate in your parking.

TABLE TOP SALE
The table top sale in aid of the Erpingham Village Hall refurbishment fund raised
nearly £200. Many thanks to all the stall holders, those who contributed
goods to the village hall table, and especially to those who helped on the day.
The money should go some way towards purchasing much needed safer lights in
the hall. HB.
ERPINGHAM WITH CALTHORPE COMMUNITY PLAY AREA
Unfortunately the play area will not be ready for the official opening ceremony
planned for 3rd April 2004. It is therefore being postponed until some time
in May.
Please watch this space for the new date.>From the Editor's Postbag
Thanks:- Betty Faulkner would like to thank everyone so much, in Aldborough
and beyond, for their kind 'get well' messages and hospital visits during her
long drawn out illness, both last year and since Christmas. They were greatly
appreciated.
More thanks:- Lynne and Ian Brown want to thank everyone for their kindness
during and after their disastrous fire, and for all the offers of practical
help.
THWAITE COMMON
Optimism was expressed in the January edition that a management plan for the
common was to be put into action, possibly enabling grazing this summer. Unfortunately
there is no further news.
In its report on the common, the Norfolk Wildlife Trust cites special features
such as the orchids, springs, and "tufa" mound. It also says: "It
would not be an exaggeration to state that this is one of the most diverse and
interesting wild grasslands in North Norfolk, if not in the whole of Norfolk
itself".
Even if many of us are aware of this, it is nice to see it written by an authority
on the matter!
I know I am not the only one who is worried to watch the common deteriorate
into an impenetrable wilderness for lack of grazing.
Anyone who is similarly concerned could address their enquiries to Graham Bull
at the District Council offices. 01263 513811.
Walkers
With Spring in the air, crocuses and daffodils are bursting into flower, and
there's excited activity in the bird world. At the same time the vigilant barn
owl silently patrols the common - so lovely to watch. The mallards seem to be
grouping in threes rather than pairs, and several have odd markings, not normal
for either male or female. I wonder how common this phenomenon is and why it
happens? Any ideas? A.M.
HALF WAY! And in 3rd place!
Matt Boreham passed the half way point on his row across the Atlantic on Monday
7th March! He also overtook the next solo boat, moving him into 3rd out of the
solo boats and 8th overall.
Now he is on the homeward stretch with only (at time of sending this) 1305miles
to go to the finish in Barbados. It has taken 7 weeks to get this far, and what
a 7 weeks! Mid February Matt's Grandpa died, aged 89 years, and Matt took this
very hard, being so far away from everyone. He found it very upsetting being
unable to help his Grandma and Mother at their time of loss, but also his own
loss, as Matt and his Grandpa were very close and Matt will miss him badly.
This news came at a time of terrible weather in the Atlantic which blew all
the rowers the wrong way and backwards and tested them all. Matt's mileage was
low that week, but as the weather changed and he began recovering from the shock,
his mileage began picking up, and he has rowed 60 miles a day at least 3 days
since. Matt's cooker broke, and is not repairable, leaving him having to eat
his freeze-dried food, which should be reconstituted with hot water, with cold
water which he is leaving on deck for an hour and half to try to warm it (imagine
making a pot noodle with cold water and you are close to what he is eating).
He also hasn't been able to have a hot cup of tea or coffee, or warm water to
wash in! One of his oars broke this week. He is carrying spares and it was not
unexpected as the oar had gained a split and had been held together with tape
for 4 weeks. There have been other small disasters, water got into a hatch and
into snack bars and fudge bars, reducing his food. His short-wave radio (news
from home on the World Service) also got water damage and is broken.. Every
part of his body hurts (bottom included) and he now has only 4 painkillers left!
The weather has been huge waves and winds, with waves as big as houses all around
him. Wildlife has been good though. There are whales right by the boat, swimming
by the boat and jumping half a mile away, causing huge splashes. Flying fish
are everywhere, and frequently fail to jump over the boat, hitting it or landing
on it. They are often being chased by other fish which also end up hitting the
boat. Birds, all that way from land, swooping round the boat. One spent all
day flapping round Matt's head, cute to start with, but drove him nuts by the
end of the day. There is a complete ecosystem under the boat, with fish of all
shapes and sizes, and the other day sharks too. (I think there might be fewer
fish now!)
Matt is expected to reach the finish sometime around the 11th April so there
is still some time to go. Once again he would like to say thank you to all his
friends and supporters, it means a lot and is a great help to know whilst he
is rowing.

PATIENT and PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT FORUMS
These are new organisations (they began in December) to give people a voice
about local healthcare. There is a Forum for every NHS Trust and Primary Care
Trust, but they function independently, being made up of local people who volunteer
to become members. Forums channel the issues that are important to local communities
and make recommendations to healthcare Trusts, who are then obliged to listen.
Forums look at health and social care from the patient's perspective and may
also consider issues that have an influence on health, e.g. environment, housing,
unemployment, poverty.
Forums are keen for people to feel welcome to come to meetings and to become
involved if they wish. These forums are for you to have your say. Phone the
NVS Forum Support Organisation on 01603 774319 for dates of meetings or more
information. Julie Colebrook is the Forum Facilitator for North Norfolk, and
for Broadland.
