FROM THE RECTOR
August is a month when many of us plan a time of holiday. For some of us this will be time away from home, for others a break in routine as the clubs and societies to which we belong will not meet again until the autumn.
I hope this month brings you joy - yet holidays are not always what they seem, where the pleasures of looking forward to a rest may not necessarily work out in practice in the ways we would wish.
What wonderfully complicated creatures we are: under God we expect the best, yet we are so easily disappointed.
Fr Brian

FROM THE CURATE
In the spring I was invited by one of the churchwardens to spend a morning with her during which she would take me on a tour of her parish. So on a glorious sunny Saturday morning in late April we set off, first of all on foot, when I was introduced to some of the local community and it was lovely to spend a little while chatting. Then I was driven round the parish and shown where the boundaries are.
It was a delightful morning, which I really enjoyed. It helped me to know the parish and community a little better.
On Saturday 3rd July 2004 I was ordained as priest in Norwich Cathedral. It was a wonderful and spirit-filled experience and I thank all those who attended the service and all who have supported me through the year. The following day I celebrated my first communion at Erpingham Church.
I look forward to my next year in the benefice with delight. Fr John

(Sitters can be sponsored for sitting!) This year's event will be on Saturday 11 September, 9.00 - 5.00. ALDBOROUGH & THURGARTON PARISH COUNCIL
is interested in hearing about what teenagers think of our villageand they are organising a meeting later in the year, with a Youth Worker. A questionnaire has already been sent round, but there may be some interested parties who have not seen it: this is a summary -
What, in your opinion, would improve Aldborough for young people? (Or does it not need any improvement?)
A couple of ideas already suggested are:
¶ a volleyball net/court
¶ a seating/meeting area (possibly partially covered)
What do you think of these two suggestions?
Please discuss with young people in the village and let Jane Maguire (No.1 The Mill, 01263 761578) know your/their views, with any other ideas, suggestions, comments, questions, etc.
Thwaite Bridge In spite of priority signs near misses are still causing anxiety. 'Slow' road plates have been requested.
Children's Play Area Village Care has offered financial support in updating equipment. Suggestions welcome.
Community Centre The mallet used by Councillor White for laying the foundation stone of the then Temperance Hall in 1884 has been offered to the Community Centre Committee by his daughter. The Committee will organise an appropriate display.
'Orchard's End' Plans are progressing for a replacement for the fire-damaged building
Future meetings: 6th September and 4th OctoberFRIENDS of ALDBOROUGH SCHOOL
The Summer Fair was a great success raising £1140.00 profit despite the weather!
Many thanks to all local businesses & everyone who donated prizes etc. and helped on the day.
Unfortunately the school Camp Out had to be cancelled due to bad weather on 9 July.

ALDBOROUGH ALLOTMENTS
Congratulations - the 2004 North Norfolk Environment Awards include the allotments as runner-up in the Community category, for engaging a wide range of residents in turning a set-aside field into allotments.

ALDBOROUGH CHURCH ROOM will be hoping to raise funds
at the Mannington Charities Day on Sunday 5th September, 12.00 - 5.00. Volunteers to help man the stall will be welcome, as will goods and goodies to sell. Bric-a-brac, books, produce, cakes - we can sell anything but would rather not have second-hand clothes or furniture, for very practical reasons. Contact Glenys on 761309, or Ruth on 768063. Please put the date in your diary and come to enjoy a day out at Mannington.
Entrance to the Grounds and Gardens costs £3 per adult (£2 concessionary) - this money and the fees from stallholders will go this year to Victim Support Norfolk. Helpers will have a complimentary ticket. The House will be open 12.30 - 4.30, £2 per adult, £1 per accompanied child over 10. All entrance money to Victim Support.

STRAWBERRY TEAS UNDER UMBRELLAS
It sounds like British grit and stiff upper lips - but it's reported that the Erpingham & Calthorpe Garden Fete was in fact great fun and very well supported, raising £775 for the funds of the two churches. There were two new attractions, the Hindolveston Silver Band and Tom Witham with his vintage tractor. Thank you to everyone who helped in any way, and especially to those who came in spite of the weather.

THWAITE COMMON
Management
A meeting of the Management Committee was held in Graham Bull's office today (12th July). This time it included the Rights Holders. Those present were:
Paul Ingham - NNDC Conservation Officer (taking John Sizer's place)
Andrena Walmsley - Norfolk Wildlife Trust (taking Helen Baczkowska's place)
Peter Willcox - District Councillor
Bob Grimble & Auriel Mims - Grazing Rights Holders
Graham Bull was in the chair.
Aspects of the plan drawn up by NWT were discussed and slightly revised in view of discussions held between Graham Bull and the Secretary of State's offices. These plans should be ready to submit by the end of the month. The hope still being that grazing will be possible next year.
Plans for cutting this year will be arranged by Paul Ingham involving local contractors and BCTV. A ceiling for cost was agreed. Costs for last year's management were incorrectly stated in June's In Touch. It should have read "around £3,000", not "between £3,000 and £4,000".
Reports on the Management Committee in In Touch will come direct from Graham Bull in the future.
Walkers
The loss of orchids by about three-quarters is very noticeable as is the rampant growth of nettle, thistle and bramble. This is compensated a little by the lovely flowering grasses, some of which have not been seen before (no doubt eaten when young by grazing animals).
Mauve mint, yellow fleabane, purple knapweed and pink willowherb will be in flower by the time you read this, giving scent and colour for us, the butterflies and the grasshoppers.
Volunteers are needed for pulling ragwort. Please contact Auriel on 01263 761665
AM.

A LOCAL ATTRACTION not just for tourists - The Straw Museum
Visitors come from all over the country - even a Mr & Mrs Straw from Melbourne, Australia! so it seems rather sad when people on the doorstep are unaware of its existence. MORE CONGRATULATIONS
Claire Knight of Alby didn't just go to Hampton Court and the Royal Horticultural Society's Garden Show - she was in it! When she won the regional heat of the BBC's Local Radio competition to design a garden she then had a week to build it and plant it at Hampton Court. 'Look East' showed it at various stages of its development as a Community garden with distinctly Norfolk planting - it was a delight to see how quickly the butterflies and bees moved in, and we weren't a bit surprised when she won top place nationally in the BBC competition. If she can do that now, what will she do when she has completed her garden design course at Easton next year?

Advance notice - Harvest Supper at Aldborough on Friday 24th September. Tickets will be ready early next month.
