FROM THE RECTOR
Autumn is a beautiful time of the year. The days are still warm enough to read
a good book relaxing in the garden, yet there is the first touch of chill in
the air. In the early mornings the mist lies low over the empty fields and the
dampness comes fresh to our breath as we look and savour.
Of course it's a season of falling away, of dying. Green growth no more, but
daily changing to exquisite patterns of colour and tone. A time of remembering.
Of how life changes and yet remains, remains in a unity and wholeness greater
than our own.
May the God of autumn, the creator who never tires of us, or for us, speak in
the fall of our year, that we may taste and know.
Fr Brian

with the assistance of several visiting speakers, to explore this core
function of discipleship, by taking part in a series of key workshops
and acts of worship, both in Norwich and more locally.
Mission is God's business, yet, if we are true to our calling, it is also our
own.
PCC members from this deanery are invited to a Springboard PCC evening on Wednesday
8th October, 7.30-9.30, at Mount Zion Family Life Centre, Heartsease Lane, Norwich

ALDBOROUGH CHURCH ROOM
For many years Dora Leonard has been the main key holder for the Church Room
and has been responsible for the bookings calendar. We shall all miss her greatly
(not just for this) and must now make other arrangements. Key holders are Ruth
Elliott, 761468, and Ruth Bayes, 768063, with Glenys Padgham as back-up (761309):
we live all in a row on the other side of the Green between the butcher's and
the Black Boys - Ruth E at Sunholme, Ruth B at Chesterfield House, and Glenys
at John Brown's House. We hope that you will find one of us at home! In dire
emergency (struck by lightning, smoke from the roof, a door swinging in a gale,
that kind of thing) Stephen Cushing also has a key and lives at 'Lumley', next-door-but-two
on the right-hand side as you approach from the Green.
Ruth Elliott has also kindly offered to be responsible for the bookings. She
has an answering machine on 761468.
The Church Room benefited by over £163 from the Church Stall at Mannington.
Many thanks to those who gave goods and bought or helped on the day.
Regular events in the Community Centre and the Church Room are not always advertised
so newcomers may not know what goes on - and, dare one say, others may forget!

is a lunch at Prince Andrew's Chapel.

THE CHILDREN'S SOCIETY
Boxholders in Aldborough have recently contributed £179.33 for the work
of this Society which works with children in schools, in prisons, in care homes,
in disadvantaged communities, and with children who have to be carers themselves.
The Children's Society makes a difference to the lives of over 40,000 children
every year.
Thanks to all those who have boxes already. Anyone who would like to join this
scheme should please contact Glenys Padgham on 761309. (NB. Money given in boxes

ALDBOROUGH TWINNING ASSOCIATION
The AGM will be on Thursday 13th November, 7.30, at the Community Centre.
Some members of the current committee have been members since its inception
over 10 years ago and are feeling in need of a break, others regret that they
cannot continue for various reasons. New committee members are urgently needed.
Much has been achieved in the last 10 years, and many people have benefited.
New life has been injected this year from Villiers St Denis, with the wholehearted
involvement of their school - this was part of the original aim in twinning.
The success of this venture is well worth building on. To discuss the responsibilities
of being a committee member, talk to Sue Mumford, 768699, and come to the AGM.

the middle/end of October.
FAREWELL TO A POSTMAN
About 60 Aldborough residents assembled in sunshine outside the Post Office
to say goodbye to Postman Tim on his retirement after over 20 years of delivering
the post in the village. His unwritten 'duties' included reaching things in
high places, undoing screwtop jars, mending the odd bit of furniture, as well
as commiserating about the bills! We shall miss him, and he took with him the
results of a collection in the village, as well as the gift of a framed print
of the village from Postmaster Peter Davison.

The Village Hall Committee is in great need of a Secretary to deal with correspondence.
(We have someone to take the minutes.) Meetings are held every two months. The
job is not an onerous one, but is vital to the continued good management of
the Hall.
In our ever expanding village, there must be someone out there who is willing
and able. Please think about it and contact Chairman Eleanor Faulkner on 01263
768073 if you can help. She will be delighted to hear from you! J.J.

THWAITE COMMON
Birds. Birdlife is on the move again. Chattering 'charms' of goldfinch are busily
collecting seed and thistledown on the common, their red yellow and black plumage
glinting in the sun as they flit from tree to tree. Swallows are starting to
gather, deciding when to leave us. Soon the unmistakable honking of geese as
they fly in a chevron will announce their arrival from the north west.
Flowers. For the first time that I can remember, the stronger species of fleabane,
rose bay, mint, and redshank have marched
across the common this summer. They have given a riot of colour - mauve, yellow
and pink. But the smaller plants have been smothered as a result. There has
been little sign of such flowers as red clover, selfheal, St. John's wort, milkwort
or bedstraw - the huge variety of flowers and grasses which are dependent on
grazing, being much diminished. It is extraordinary to witness 'succession'
taking place over such a short space of time ( less than two years since the
fences were removed and grazing ceased).
Fruit and nuts. This year trees and bushes are laden asking to be made into
Christmas goodies.
The new management has done much whilst drawing up plans to gain permission
to graze certain areas. Let's hope its efforts bear fruit for next year. A.M.

THE NEXT ISSUE will be for November until mid December and the one after
will be for mid December until the end of January 2004.
As may be imagined, with a newsletter coming out normally around the 25th of
each month, there tend to be a few problems at Christmas. So can we try a different
timetable this year as an experiment?
Contributors please note, copy will be needed by Monday 13th October, and should
cover events up to 17th December. The next copy date will be 1st December, covering
events up to 31st January, for delivery over the weekend of 13/14th December.
The stalwarts who deliver copies should find this a lot easier.

A story of four people: Mr Everybody, Mr Somebody, Mr Anybody, and Mr Nobody.
There was an important job to be done - Everybody was sure Somebody would do
it. Anybody could have done it but Nobody did. Somebody got cross because it
was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody would do it but Nobody could
find Anybody despite the fact that Somebody was capable. The result was that
Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody didn't do what Anybody could have done
quite easily in the first place.
